Lazada vs Shopee Thailand: Which Is Better for Foreigners?

Compare Lazada and Shopee Thailand for foreigners: app access, English support, payments, verified sellers, delivery, vouchers, returns, and disputes.

I use both Lazada and Shopee in Thailand, but Shopee is my default for everyday shopping. In my experience, Shopee deliveries are usually faster, it often has more useful promotions and coupons, and some products offer paid instant delivery in under four hours. That makes it the closest local equivalent I have found to Amazon-style convenience.

App and Account Access

Both platforms are built around country-specific storefronts. Lazada Thailand is generally easier to access with an overseas app-store account. Shopee’s Thailand app availability can depend on the country attached to the Apple App Store or Google Play account; the Thai website remains an alternative.

English Support

Lazada provides the more consistent English interface. On both platforms, individual seller descriptions and reviews may remain in Thai, so image translation is useful.

My Balmuda Toaster Price Comparison

For expensive purchases, I always compare both platforms because the discounts can be very different. I bought my Balmuda K11F toaster during one of the major platform sale periods. My completed Shopee Mall order came to 6,218 THB after discounts. I remember the Lazada price being around 8,200 THB at the time, so Shopee was still roughly 2,000 THB cheaper.

I do not expect the same difference on every order because platform prices, vouchers, coins, and seller promotions change constantly. The purchase is a good example of why I check the final checkout total on both platforms instead of comparing only the headline listing price.

Payments

Payment acceptance can depend on the account, card issuer, seller, and fraud checks. Thai bank transfers, PromptPay, platform wallets, and cash on delivery may be available alongside cards. Keep a backup payment method.

For larger purchases, I value the additional card protection available through my American Express card. If an order has a problem, I would raise it with the platform and seller first. If the issue could not be resolved, a card dispute would be my backup option.

Verified Sellers and Counterfeits

Use LazMall or Shopee Mall for official brand stores and authorized sellers. A mall badge is more useful than choosing a platform based only on headline price.

Delivery and Returns

Delivery is easy in my building. When a Lazada or Shopee parcel arrives, the front desk sends me a message on LINE with a photo of the package. They then bring it directly to my unit. I never need to go down to the lobby.

That is my condominium’s process rather than a service provided by Lazada or Shopee, so the experience will depend on the building. In a staffed Bangkok condo, online deliveries can be almost completely hands-off.

Another difference I noticed in Thailand is how often buyers are encouraged to film themselves opening a package. My girlfriend records her unboxings so she has evidence if an item arrives damaged, incomplete, or different from the listing. I usually do not bother because I do not want to spend time filming every delivery.

If I receive something with a problem, my first step is to raise it through the platform and seller. For an expensive or fragile order, filming the opening is still the safer approach because it provides clear evidence if a dispute is necessary.

One Caveat: It Is Not a Two-Horse Race Any More

This comparison is about the two platforms I use, but TikTok Shop has grown to roughly a third of the Thai market and by most reporting has passed Lazada into second place. It is a genuinely different way to shop — discovery through livestreams rather than search — so it is not a like-for-like swap. Worth checking for beauty, fashion and small household items where the livestream discounting gets aggressive. The full rundown of Thai shopping sites covers where it fits.

Which Should You Use?

  • Choose Shopee: for everyday orders, faster delivery options, and its frequent promotions and coupons.
  • Choose Lazada: when its final checkout total is better or the product or official seller is unavailable on Shopee.
  • Check both: for electronics, furniture, appliances, and other higher-value purchases.
