There is no single best Thailand visa. There is the one that matches how long you want to stay, what you plan to do here, and in 2026 increasingly whether you need a bank account, because that has become the thing that separates the categories in practice.

Start with how long you are staying

Under 60 days and you probably need nothing. Visa exemption is free and requires no application, only the free arrival card before you fly. Worth knowing that Thailand approved cutting this from 60 days to 30 for most countries in May 2026. It has not taken effect and will not until it appears in the Royal Gazette, but check before booking a longer trip.

Longer than that and you are choosing a category. Remote workers generally look at the DTV: five years, multiple entry, 180 days per stay. People aged 50 and over have three retirement routes, and the obvious one is usually not the best one. Anyone who wants the paperwork to simply go away, and can afford it, buys Thailand Privilege.

The thing that changed in 2026

Thai banks now screen on visa classification after the mule-account crackdown, and the DTV is classified as a Tourist visa under the Immigration Act despite its five-year validity. DTV holders are largely unable to open an account, and some accounts opened in 2024 have been closed since. If banking matters to you, that belongs in the visa decision rather than being discovered afterwards.

What these guides do

Every fee, requirement and rule below was checked against Thai government, embassy or Immigration Bureau sources in August 2026, and where a claim is contested or a rule has been approved but not commenced, the guides say so rather than picking a side. Where the widely repeated version is wrong, they say that too: the DTV does not require health insurance or a police clearance, whatever the agency sites tell you.
